Aunque me consideran muy flexible, no puedo reprimir mi lado severo cuando escribo sobre España. No lo puedo remediar. El problema común a los países meridionales de la Zona Euro, —dejando al margen la productividad por hora trabajada, que no es tan baja como algunos creen— es su bajo porcentaje de población laboralmente activa, comparativamente muy inferior a la del norte de Europa, especialmente entre la población femenina. La deuda soberana, o si se quiere el déficit público que viene arrastrando España, se debe naturalmente a los menores ingresos impositivos, debido al alto desempleo y al nulo crecimiento económico.
Los problemas de deuda pública o privada difícilmente pueden ser resueltos mediante la asunción de más deuda. Es difícil solucionar un problema mediante dinero prestado, cuando el problema viene precisamente de estar excesivamente endeudado. Eso lo sabía mi abuela y lo sabe el mercado, de ahí el alto tipo de interés exigido a España. En microeconomía, los clientes siempre tienen la razón y en macroeconomía, son los mercados los que siempre la tienen. Los mercados desconfían de que España pueda pagar nuevos préstamos, de ahí el alto tipo de interés. La evolución de los tipos de interés para las letras u obligaciones, son solamente el síntoma. Pretender puentear a los mercados mediante medidas directas por parte del Banco Central Europeo, tal y como los gobiernos español e italiano pretenden, equivale a dejar a un lado la economía de mercado, que es la base del sistema cambiario occidental.
